Battech International - Types Of Battery

Feb 18th — Battech International Limited a global leader in branded consumer and industrial batteries today announced the introduction of Portable Device Charger, which offers gadget-loving consumers a more convenient way to power there portable electronic devices wherever they are.

Do you need batteries?

Batteries are all over around us -- in our cars, our PCs, laptops, mobile phones, PDAs & wire-less, portable MP3 players, watches, medical equipments, cameras, toys and cell phones etc. A battery is essentially a can (enclosure) full of chemicals that produce electrons. Chemical reactions that produce electrons are called electrochemical reactions. The first battery was created by Alessandro Volta in 1800. To create his battery, he made a stack by alternating layers of zinc, blotting paper soaked in salt water, and silver etc. This arrangement was known as a voltaic pile. Since their development over 250 years ago, batteries have remained among the most expensive energy sources, and their manufacture consumes many valuable resources.. Ever since, there is no looking back. The most commonly used battery today is a Dry Cell. These are not chargeable. But the mobile applications have crated a niche for chargeable batteries. All OEMs packs different shaped batteries for their equipment to suit the size, shape and ratings of the equipment they manufacture. So there is no dearth of the types of batteries available in the market. But only right one fits only particular equipment.

A battery should ideally be good if it has high energy, very slim, less weight, safe & reliable, rechargeable, easy availability in case replacement is needed. Nearly all of your mobile applications can be extend in running time or have a slimmer design and less weight. For all your needs wide range of very flat and high energy types batteries are available with a varied voltage (V) and diverse current (mAh) capacities. Battery assemblies with specific voltage or capacities are possible. Care should be taken to remove the batteries from the equipment when not in use for a while. This will save both, your equipment and the batteries.

Rechargeable batteries self-discharge more rapidly than disposable alkaline batteries; up to three percent a day (depending on temperature). Due to their poor shelf life, they shouldn't be left in a drawer and then relied upon to power a flashlight or a small radio in an emergency. For this reason, it's a good idea to keep a few alkaline batteries on hand. Rechargeable Batteries are almost always "dead" when you get them, and must be charged before first use.

There are three basic types of rechargeable battery. Nickel Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) & Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) is the rechargeable battery that most people are familiar with. This technology has been around for many years, and rechargeable NiCd batteries are commonplace. They have two major drawbacks, which mean that most quality portables no longer use NiCd batteries. One, Heavy metal: The chemicals in Nickel Cadmium are not environmentally friendly, and the disposal of cadmium-rich waste is an increasing problem. Two, Memory effect This is sometimes referred to as voltage depression. If you do not fully discharge a NiCd cell before recharging it, after a few cycles, the battery "learns" this low water mark, and acts as if it is discharged at this point. The work-around is simple: you have to run the cell down before recharging it. Unfortunately, it is not always convenient to do this. You want the phone to be available for use, not sitting running the battery down. In addition, the cells are connected in series, so although some cells may be discharged, others may not be.

Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries claim to be superior to NiCd not only because they don't contain cadmium. They also are less prone to the "memory effect" problem and a discharge every week or two is ample, unlike NiCd which need to be run down every other charge to retain their capacity. They also have a higher capacity in relation to their size and weight. The drawback of NiMH is that they don't seem to last as long as NiCd cells. After a few hundred charge cycles, the crystals inside NiMH cells become coarser, and although they are able to provide the power for long standby times, when the extra current to sustain a call is needed, the voltage available drops rapidly, and suddenly you're getting Low Battery warnings. End the call, and after a few minutes rest, the battery is fine for many hours standby. That's OK unless you want to use your phone!

Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) is the current "latest and greatest" technology for mobile phone batteries. Li-Ion gives exceptional capacity for its size and weight, and does not suffer from the memory effect. This means that you can top up the charge whenever it is convenient. The only real drawback of Li-on is that they are expensive, and so they tend to be supplied only in top-of-the-range gadgets. You should avoid completely discharging Li-Ion batteries.

There are also Lithium Polymer batteries, but these are very similar to Lithium Ion, except that they can be moulded into more varied shapes, and so be squeezed into smaller phone casings.
